Drawing from subtle memories and experiences of her personal life, Li’s paintings are concerned with the idea of epiphany, both in terms of understanding the self, but also one’s relationship with others and their environment. Her carefully considered choice of color palette and tonal discrepancies provides a visual register of how people experience and reconcile with their inner selves in the midst of complex social realities. Composed of simple shapes and objects, the works allude to the natural world while avoiding suggestions of narrative that limit experience and interpretation. These paintings are documentation of the artist’s reflective creative process, inviting viewers to also contemplate and consider their own sensibilities of the world. Li received her BFA in Chinese Painting from The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 2020 and her MFA from the Royal College of Art, London in 2023.
